Wine Tribute to The Boston Red Sox – Happy Opening Day!!

As I had mentioned in a previous post (Fine… I’ll Have A Beer) I talk about how to choose a certain beer based on the wines you like.  Well this article tells of wine that is best suited for Baseball or more specifically a Boston Red Sox Party… I being a Boston native am a big Boston sports fan, including the Red ‘Sawks’ (yes it is somewhat hard living in NYC) found this very entertaining article dedicated to Boston Red Sox Wine and Wineries in Massachusetts that all my Bostonians should all try!  Go to to read up on the wineries!

In light of Opening Day, I wanted to highlight the Boston Red Sox Player’s who have participated in this “player’s” wine that is tied to good causes.  It’s called Longball Cellars and they create wine for several Major League Baseball players where proceeds go to that player’s charity of choice.  To date, teams that have a “Player” wine include: Atlanta, Boston, New York, Mets, Chicago, Cinci, Philly, and the 500 Home Run Club.  They also have wines of a few hockey players, wrestlers, and others in different genres.  It is a cool site even just to get a laugh seeing your favorite player on a bottle of wine or to actually purchase a bottle and enjoy a nice glass while knowing you have also contributed to doing something philanthropic… Bottles go for about $15 or less.

All in all, a great selection for entertaining wine and good conversation starter over your Red Socks World Series Party…. (Go SOX)!

Happy Opening Day Everyone!!!

90+ Cellars – “Rated Wines at an Extreme Value”

90+ Cellars Label

I read an article on (take a look!) about this company 90+ Cellars who offer high quality and high rated wines for a discounted price!  They make sure that their oversupply is a 90 or higher in rating and is the best buy from a respected winery.  In this sense it’s like a Marshalls when you find that great designer bag for half the price!  They literally have bottles that would be $75 for only $25!  The only catch (and I think the really fun part), is that you have no idea what winery the wine came from!  So take a chance and indulge in a gold medal wine at an affordable price and try to guess where it came from!  For all of those wine enthusiasts out there it sounds like a great idea as an activity at your next house/apartment party!

Whole Foods Serving Beer & Wine…

Whole Foods is starting to implement an actual bar into their consumer grocery shopping experience!  As of now it has only been active in a few locations – Arizona, Illinois, Texas.. but they plan to spread into all 305 stores!  I don’t know about you but I would love to stop for a glass of wine to break up my grocery shopping especially if the lines are long!  I just hope shoppers don’t take this for granted where it gets too rowdy but take it for what it is; a pleasurable addition to the food shopping experience.  I hope this test turns into a real success and hurries to NYC!  Read the full article here:  ”Whole Foods tests bars selling craft beer and local wine in its stores

Vyne & Lure Fishbar

This weekend we went to Vyne Wine Bar in Greenwich Village for a pre-dinner drink before heading over to Lure Fishbar.  We got there around 830pm and it was really quiet.  They had a nice fire going with leather couches and a long stone table for people to sit at – key to a great wine bar for tastings.  I liked the inside however, I learn towards more of an old wood, exposed red brick, more authentic Italian feel to a wine bar.  This was a bit more modern but definitely a good spot to share a bottle of wine with close friends to really dig in and catch up since it was a bit on the quieter side.

We were in the mood for a little bubbly so split a bottle of 2010 La Spinetta Moscato d’Asti Bricco Quaglia three ways which was delicious.  It was very sweet so make sure you are in the mood for a fruity sparkling wine.  It was a light – medium bodied sparkling white wine with lots of acidity, dry and very peachy with a hint of green pear flavor.  It was a reasonably priced bottle for about $48.  This would actually go great with an outside Spring/Summer brunch or complement a nice dessert.. like the ice cream sandwiches we had at Lure!

We headed over to Lure Fishbar and had the most amazing time.  The interior is reminiscent of a gorgeous cruise ship – love the nautical theme they have going on.  The food was delicious (Recommend: Lobster Roll, Rock Shrimp risotto, Lobster croutons – app).  Their wine list offers over 250 bottles starting around $40 – over $100.  At Happy Hour (5pm – 7pm) they offer featured wines (white, red, rose) by the glass for $6! So I would definitely go back to see what the happy hour is like but the bar scene is very cool and of course the dinner with it’s extensive wine list is also amazing.  Check out the dessert too, next time I would like to try some of their ports and maybe if I am daring enough, their Grappa!!!!

Wine Bottles Recycled Into Fancy Cheese Plates!

After attending the NYC Wine Expo last month, not only did we taste and discuss amazing wines from all over the world we also found an amazing idea that I fell in love with and couldn’t stop talking about – Recycling your wine bottle and flattening it into a cheeseboard!

Take your favorite bottle of wine and turn it into a fancy cheeseboard for entertaining!  Talk about a converstaion starter!  It was the first time I had ever seen this done before and I literally couldn’t stop thinking about how cute/useful these are.  The company that we talked to called “Treasures Of The Vine” located in Northern New Jersey, can take your favorite wine bottle, flatten it (with front and back labels intact) and create this lovely cheeseboard great for a wine and cheese party in your apartment, back porch, or now since the weather is getting nicer (hopefully) on a boat while enjoying a pre-dinner cruise!  Not only do they transform wine bottles, they basically do anything glass including your favorite vodka, champagne, whiskey, etc..  They also let you pick out a cheese spreader from about 20 options to go with your recycled bottle.  Check them out and if you don’t see the bottle you are looking for you can contact them to put in a request.  They make great gifts too (Mother’s Day is just around the corner)!

Some of my favorites right off the website…
