Lobster Rolls and Champagne

As Lord Byron {here} once said… “A woman should never be seen eating or drinking, unless it be lobster salad and Champagne..”  I did just that a few Sunday’s ago however, a little less elegantly as I am sure Lord Byron had imagined.  I felt as though I stepped outside of NYC and into my most comfy-est of comfort zones, a New England vibe at – Luke’s Lobster {here} – the infamous lobster ‘shack’ in the East Village (93 E. 7th st.).  We grabbed a few lobster rolls to go and sipped and ate our rolls in bliss.

 It was truly a day of firsts!  First time to Luke’s and first time trying Hosmer Sparkling Wine {here} from upstate NY in the Finger Lakes. So how was pairing these two firsts together? Lord Byron was right on point, as to my surprise this pairing actually tasted so exquisite and lovely that I was craving another lobster roll and more Hosmer!   

 The vibrant bubbles, honey, pear and apple notes went so well with the lobster meat, livened up the seasoning on the lobster roll a bit and the brut (dry) champagne/sparkling was delicate enough not overpower Luke’s delicious Lobster Roll.   A true New England dish that I will be replicating this summer in… New England!

‘Tasting’ in Tribeca

Tribeca, an iconic, historic and truly authentic part of New York City that houses countless ‘impossible to get into’ restaurants yet also offers those hidden gems that are a bit more accessible, was the perfect atmosphere to kick off the week that takes over this magnificent area – The Tribeca Film Festival.  A dear friend and I celebrated the start of the festival like all great wine lovers do – with the Spring Walk Around Tasting at the renowned and celebrated Tribeca Grill.  With an impeccable wine list “one of only seven in New York that has been selected by Wine Spectator to receive a Grand Award” and a wonderful atmosphere, we had a fabulous time catching up and sipping coveted wines from the likes of Chateau Ste. Michelle, Stags Leap, Nicolas Feuillatte and more! Did you know that Tribeca Grill has a ‘raw space’ for fun events like these?  I didn’t, but now I do and am definitely going to keep my eye out for other great events that they offer. Some favorites to kick us off into Spring are below!

Chateau Ste. Michelle Canoe Ridge Merlot 2008 – Not a Merlot fan, but this might have transformed me.  How does a fruitful taste with a hint of caramel to smooth out the edges sound? Pretty darn good!

Antica Chardonnay 2009 – Such an impressive Chardonnay with delicate fruit, great ‘minerality’ and a smooth yet vibrant finish!

   

Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Rose – It was rated 92 pts by Wine Spectator for a reason!  The lightweight Brut Rose was elegantly fruity and dry with notes of orange and hints of raspberry. A fabulous Rose to share at your fabulous dinner party or any special celebration.

Chateau Ste. Michelle Heaven Hill Sauvignon Blanc 2010 – Honeysuckle flavors and sweetness, such a wonderful transitional wine for Spring to Summer.

  


Holy Pug!

Quite a fitting wine for winepug!  I was fortunate enough to receive a complimentary bottle of Pug Wine’s complex and balanced Pug Cab 2007 from Hoopes Vineyard in Oakville, Napa Valley to try and combine forces of wine and pug lovers!

A wine that is as exceptional as it’s Pug artwork, this Pug Cab is a perfect transitional from Winter to Spring as it is still heavy enough to keep the chill out of those windy nights but you will be begging to drink this outside in Central Park with a picnic full of goat cheese, grapes, and bitter dark chocolate.  Not only is the wine full of deep luscious fruit, ‘drinkable’ tannins and a sensational spicy finish, each bottle is artwork specific. The artwork done by Jim Dewitt reminds me of a Peter Max with the sketching and vibrant colors.  Interesting how the wine tastes just as vibrant as the artwork looks and as a personality of a pug!

Overall, a wonderful bottle of wine that is worth the $60 splurge!

Located at 26 Astor Place, bahr che sets a romantic scene for an intimate gathering inside their 10-table quaint yet classically chic space. With a dramatic wine wall lined with endless bottles of great wines from across the world, bahr che proves to be a true date spot and one of the only that I’ve noticed in Astor Place.  As a true hidden gem, or I’m sure not so hidden anymore, you will find yourself dining there on a romantic date, popping in for a glass of wine found on their treasured wine list or enjoying a nightcap on your way home from downtown with the friendly staff.

And… Just as you thought this wine, cheese, and charcuterie couldn’t sound any better, they also offer Winemaker Wednesdays to exhibit the authenticity of a good wine bar through introducing wines and winemakers to guests who love the exploration of wine.  On February 1st, I was invited to a special wine tasting with renowned winemaker Paul Hobbs at bahr che for their Winemaker Wednesday event.

Now onto the winemaker – Paul Hobbs…

From growing up in Buffalo, NY with ‘no wine on the dinner table’ to studying and working amongst the leading winemakers in the industry (Simi, Robert Mondavi), Paul Hobbs shared his journey of wine through his fabulous wines from California and Argentina.  The night was full of listening to his stories, trials and errors, and connecting the wine to his words (and small bites!) one sip at a time.  His parting words when we asked, “What is one thing you want to share with the world of wine lovers” his response – “Just remember, from the ground up”.  So many meanings and so much detail to think about!

Some favorites from the night…

Vina Cobos, Bramare Marchiori Vineyard Chardonnay 2009 – $39.99
Extreme buttery taste with a hint of apricot. Extremely smooth.  Highly recommend for those buttery Chard lovers!

2009 Pinot Noir, ‘Lindsay Vineyard’ Paul Hobbs – $97
A beautiful garnet colored Pinot Noir with a delicious plum and luscious fruit flavor.  It almost tasted like a ripe fruit roll-up. Hints of oak.  Very exquisite Pinot Noir that is worth the splurge!

2010 Vina Cobos Felino Malbec – $25
Black plums, hint of cedar taste, extremely ripe tannins that make this wine beautifully structured and should be served at a fancy date night dinner by candlelight
